SKS Barrel

I only made minimal changes to the barrel, choosing to rely on the short length of the paratrooper barrel itself to give the project most of its character.

First I hack-sawed off the bayonet mount and cleaning rod guide. Then I used a metal file to rough shape it. (this is the point of the photo above)

Next I used progressively finer grits of emery cloth to round and smooth the barrel. Working the emery cloth side to side like polishing a shoe makes quick work of smoothing the barrel.

I then touched up the exposed metal, including where I nicked the sight hood, with cold blue.

Rather than throw a scope onto the SKS I decided to continue with a minimalist approach and just upgrade the front sight.with a neon orange one that gives excellent visibility and contrast under most conditions.

A look at the installed sight.
