Shaping the stock

Saw off the hand guard bottom portion of the stock just past the step, as indicated on the top stock in the pic below. Then use a file (not a rough wood rasp) to reshape the end to a look that suits you, as I have, shown on the bottom stock in the pic below. Use long slow strokes and proceed slowly. Now sand the whole stock with 100, then150 grit sandpaper until you get everything smooth and shaped the way you want it. You will sand with finer sand paper later, in the refinishing step.
